European countries merge airspace in bid to cut costs, pollutionEurActiv.com, 20 November 2008 - In a bid to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of aviation, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland, which together cover more than half of all flights in Europe, have agreed to merge their airspace and manage traffic irrespective of national borders.

The WBCSD's EEB Releases Update on Latest Progress

Geneva 18 November 2008 - Buildings are responsible for about 40% of energy use in most countries. The EEB project will determine which combination of recommendations will most effectively result in substantial energy and emission reductions, putting us on a committed path towards zero net energy buildings.

Saving Through Biodiversity - DuPont

Geneva 13 November 2008 - Intensive agriculture had turned Spain's 325-hectare Tamón Valley in Asturias into an area with low biological diversity dominated by two huge monocultures: fields and eucalyptus plantations. In 1990 DuPont started a greenfield project in the Valley so as to both increase local biodiversity and save the company money.

Greener Wood

Geneva, 11 November 2008 - It is surprising how many forest products a company uses, ranging from paper, for the vast majority of companies, to packaging, wooden pallets and mahogany boardroom tables. Buying the “right” wood, sustainably produced without ravaging native forests or displacing indigenous peoples' rights, is a good way for a company to decrease its environmental footprint while proactively supporting good forest management.

Partnering for Conservation: Gaz de France

Geneva, 6 November 2008 - Gaz de France's subsidiary, GRTgaz, takes biodiversity into account in all of its activities. Specifically, the company is implementing biodiversity corridors above its underground pipes transporting natural gas, helping to connect and maintain biodiversity areas in Ile-de-France. Thanks to these efforts, GRTgaz and local authorities are consolidating the knowledge of biodiversity corridor implementation and adding environmental value to the land that is crossed by gas pipelines.

“No Net Loss” Lake: Petro-Canada

Geneva, 2 November 2008 - Petro-Canada's Fort Hills Oil Sands mining operation is expected to mine more than four billion barrels of bitumen over the next three to four decades, with rates of up to 280,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. In order to address the obvious environmental concerns surrounding the project, Petro-Canada is committed to sustaining the environmental integrity of the area, leaving as small an environmental footprint as possible and providing offsets to compensate for permanently impacted areas.

Concerns for Ecosystems Match those for Development

Geneva, 31 October 2008 - The 1987 Brundtland Report defined sustainable development as forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The needs of future generations may be hard to predict, but it is even harder to imagine them doing without freshwater, a predictable climate, productive topsoil, pollination and genetic resources. And in the middle of this century, it is expected that a global population of some 9 billion will have those needs.

Funding Biodiversity: EDP

Geneva, 30 October 2008 - Operating in biodiversity-sensitive regions in Portugal, EDP has a vested interest in demonstrating the overall positive impact of its activities in the country, not least because the company's strategy includes the reinforcement of electricity generation through hydropower. In 2007 EDP founded a biodiversity conservation fund of 2.5 million Euros. The fund demonstrates EDP's capacity and willingness to implement its far-reaching biodiversity policy through improving scientific knowledge.
